There are visits that turn an ordinary day into one of those days that the whole team remembers for a long time to come. A few weeks ago, we welcomed back a patient who had travelled from Dublin to Málaga for embryo donation treatment at URE Centro Gutenberg. This time, she wasn’t coming for a consultation or to start a new course of treatment. She was coming to introduce us to Jack. Seeing a family return with their baby is always one of the most wonderful moments we experience at the clinic. It allows us to reconnect with those who placed their trust in us and to meet those little ones who, for months, were the subject of so many shared conversations, consultations and moments of anticipation.
A story that began many years earlier
She had been longing to become a mother for almost 18 years. After suffering a perinatal loss of her daughter late in her pregnancy and enduring a difficult journey marked by recurrent miscarriages and endometriosis, she decided to keep looking for a way to start a family. What is embryo donation?
Embryo donation, also known as embryo donation or adoption, is an assisted reproduction treatment in which embryos that have been donated anonymously and altruistically by other individuals or couples are transferred to the patient. It can be an alternative for women and couples who, for various reasons, are unable to use their own gametes or who have undergone previous treatments without achieving pregnancy. Each case must be assessed on an individual basis to determine the most appropriate treatment, taking into account the patient’s medical history, age and personal circumstances.
An initial attempt that did not yield the expected result
In February 2024, she underwent her first embryo donation treatment, but the result was negative. As is often the case with assisted reproduction, she did not become pregnant on the first attempt. It was a difficult time, but after a while she decided to try again. In October of that same year, she returned to Málaga for a second embryo transfer, and this time the pregnancy test was positive. After so many years of waiting for that moment, she could finally begin to imagine that her dream was within reach.
Jack’s Birth
Her pregnancy continued under the care of her medical team in Ireland, whilst Dr Sánchez and our team remained in contact with her to support her and answer any questions she might have during the first few weeks. In June 2025, at 37 weeks’ gestation, Jack was born. A healthy and long-awaited baby. For his mother, that birth meant much more than simply the arrival of a child. It was the happy ending to a journey that had begun many years earlier and the start of a completely new chapter.
A visit that filled the clinic with joy
A few months after his birth, she returned to URE Centro Gutenberg to introduce him to us. Jack wandered through our corridors, bringing smiles, hugs and a great deal of emotion to those who had supported his mother during her treatment. These reunions are one of the greatest gifts we receive. Because during assisted reproduction treatment, so much is shared: important decisions, doubts, phone calls, news and moments of uncertainty. That is why, when a family returns with their baby, we feel that the story is complete.
A very special souvenir from Ireland
Before that visit, our patient had already wanted to share another very special moment with us. She sent us an article published in an Irish magazine in which she appeared alongside Jack, after he had been chosen as one of their ‘Top Babies’.
Beyond the recognition itself, we were particularly moved that she wanted to share that memory with us. After so many years of waiting to become a mother, today she was able to proudly celebrate every little moment with her son.
