EmbryoGlue: What It Is, How It Works, and Fertility Treatment Costs

What Is EmbryoGlue?

Embryo transfer is one of the most sensitive and critical procedures in IVF treatment. EmbryoGlue is a medium specifically designed for embryo transfer, developed to enhance the embryo’s environment during this process to promote implantation.

In addition to the basic composition of an embryo culture medium, EmbryoGlue has a high concentration of hyaluronic acid and recombinant human albumin.

How Does the EmbryoGlue Technique Work?

Before the transfer is performed, the selected embryos are placed in the EmbryoGlue medium. This step ensures that the embryos are immersed in an environment that favors implantation.

EmbryoGlue has a viscosity similar to uterine fluid, improving the environment and minimizing embryo displacement.

Hyaluronic acid binds to molecules on the uterine surface and acts as a bridge between the embryo and the uterus. This helps the embryo adhere to the uterus in a manner very similar to natural conception.

Is EmbryoGlue Effective?

Recent studies have shown that, in certain treatments, the high concentrations of hyaluronic acid and recombinant human albumin present in EmbryoGlue may improve clinical pregnancy and live birth rates in IVF while also slightly reducing the miscarriage rate.

Indications for EmbryoGlue Use:

N

Patients with implantation failure.

This refers to cases in which a woman or couple undergoes assisted reproduction treatment—specifically in vitro fertilization (IVF)—receiving high-quality embryos with an apparently normal endometrium but failing to achieve pregnancy. If this situation occurs in at least two cycles, it is classified as implantation failure.

N

Embryos with low morphological quality: In the laboratory, embryologists monitor the daily development of embryos from fertilization and classify them based on quality.

Grade A: Optimal quality embryos with the highest implantation potential.
Grade B: Good quality embryos with a high implantation potential.
Grade C: Medium-quality embryos with a moderate implantation potential.
Grade D: Low-quality embryos with a lower implantation potential.

N

Patients with recurrent miscarriages

At URE Centro Gutenberg, recurrent miscarriage is defined as spontaneous pregnancy loss occurring two or three consecutive times. This rare condition affects approximately 1% (women with more than three consecutive miscarriages) to 5% (women with more than two consecutive miscarriages) of the population.

Is EmbryoGlue Contraindicated for Other Patients?

There are no contraindications for its use in any patient, provided it is indicated. The use of EmbryoGlue does not negatively affect embryos or the patient’s endometrium.

Can It Be Applied to All Embryos?

Yes. Although its use is indicated for low-quality embryos, it can be used as a transfer medium for all embryos.

How Much Does EmbryoGlue Cost?

As an additional technique in IVF treatments that is not used in all cases, EmbryoGlue has a cost of €300 per embryo transfer
