This system is introduced into the cervix and allows us to visualise the cervical canal, endometrial cavity and the orifices which open into the fallopian tubes.<\/p>\n<p>To obtain a better view,\u00a0<strong>a gas or liquid is used<\/strong>\u00a0during the examination to help distend the uterine cavity.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_types_of_hysteroscopy_are_there\"><\/span>What types of hysteroscopy are there?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>We can differentiate between\u00a0<strong>two types<\/strong>\u00a0of hysteroscopy procedures, and we will explain each one below:<\/p>\n<p>First is the\u00a0<strong>diagnostic hysteroscopy<\/strong>\u00a0which is performed for the sole purpose of visualising the inside of the uterine cavity. This procedure is carried out in the doctor\u2019s consultation and generally does not require anaesthesia, though in some cases local anaesthesia may be used.<\/p>\n<p>The second type is the\u00a0<strong>surgical hysteroscopy<\/strong>\u00a0which is used when a surgical intervention is required. In these cases there is a previous diagnosis and the purpose of the procedure is to correct an existing problem.<\/p>\n<p>With a surgical hysteroscopy anaesthesia will be administered to the patient. This means that the intervention will be performed in the operating theatre and requires the patient to be admitted to the hospital, though she is\u00a0<strong>normally discharged the same day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_is_the_diagnostic_hysteroscopy_performed\"><\/span>How is the diagnostic hysteroscopy performed?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>As we said above, a hysteroscopy involves\u00a0<strong>introducing an optical system<\/strong>\u00a0into the uterine cavity at the same time a gas or liquid is administered in order to enlarge the cavity and enable visualisation.<\/p>\n<p>This diagnostic procedure is generally well\u2011tolerated by patients, has\u00a0<strong>very few complications<\/strong>\u00a0and does not require hospital admission.<\/p>\n<p>The diagnostic hysteroscopy is normally carried out\u00a0<strong>between the end of menstruation and ovulation<\/strong>, though it\u2019s possible to perform this procedure at any time during a woman\u2019s cycle.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_is_a_diagnostic_hysteroscopy_indicated\"><\/span>When is a diagnostic hysteroscopy indicated?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This test is used to\u00a0<strong>confirm or rule out a diagnosis<\/strong>\u00a0of polyps, submucosal fibroids (fibroids inside the uterine cavity), intrauterine adhesions (Asherman\u2019s Syndrome) or malformations of the uterus (uterine septum, subseptate uterus, T-shaped uterus, directly visualise an intrauterine device\u2026).<\/p>\n<p>A hysteroscopy may also be performed for the\u00a0<strong>study of abnormal uterine bleeding<\/strong>, in cases where\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urecentrogutenberg.es\/en\/tools-for-facing-infertility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">infertility is suspected<\/a>\u00a0to have a uterine or endometrial cause, recurrent miscarriage, implantation failure in IVF cycles, etc.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A hysteroscopy is one of the tests we use in assisted reproduction clinics to examine the uterine cavity and\u00a0diagnose fertility issues\u00a0when necessary.
