It\u2019s important for you to understand that\u00a0<strong>a female\u2019s age directly affects her fertility<\/strong>. However, it is evident that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urecentrogutenberg.es\/en\/pregnancy-at-the-age-of-40-reasons-to-postpone-motherhood-today\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">postponing motherhood until an older age<\/a>\u00a0is becoming increasingly frequent in our society.<\/p>\n<p>At our fertility clinic in Spain, the average age of the patients we generally treat has risen and is\u00a0<strong>around 37-38 years old<\/strong>, while the number of women who want to become mothers over the age of 40 has also grown.<\/p>\n<p>A female\u2019s age is the main prognostic factor from a<a href=\"https:\/\/urecentrogutenberg.es\/en\/female-infertility-conditions-and-diseases-that-can-cause-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0fertility standpoint<\/a>. In other words, age is the factor which has\u00a0<strong>the greatest impact on a female\u2019s likelihood to get pregnant<\/strong>\u00a0each month. These eggs start to go through the natural process of cell death as soon as the female is born.<\/p>\n<p>When she is born, a female has one or two million eggs in her ovaries. When her periods begin (menarche), this number has already fallen to about 400,000\u00a0or\u00a0450,000, of which\u00a0<strong>about one thousand eggs will be \u201cused up\u201d every month\u00a0<\/strong>in order for one egg to be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urecentrogutenberg.es\/en\/ovulation-why-its-important-to-know-when-it-takes-place-in-assisted-reproduction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">released during ovulation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, the female will have about\u00a0<strong>400 ovulatory cycles during her reproductive years<\/strong>. When she is young (between 20\u00a0to\u00a030 years of age), fertility or the chances of fertilisation are \u201cgood\u201d (30% approximately, for each menstrual cycle), and the risks are low (for example, the rate of miscarriage is between 10 and 15%). This is due to the fact that ovarian reserve is good both in terms of quantity and quality of the eggs.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_does_female_fertility_decline_with_age\"><\/span>How does female fertility decline with age?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Like we said at the beginning, a female\u2019s\u00a0<strong>chances of getting pregnant gradually decrease as she gets older<\/strong>, especially after the age of\u00a037 and drastically\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urecentrogutenberg.es\/en\/becoming-a-mother-at-40-pregnancy-risks-beginning-at-this-age\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">after the age of 40<\/a>. Additionally, the risks such as spontaneous miscarriage are considerably more likely.<\/p>\n<p>At URE Centro Gutenberg we believe that understanding this reality is important not only for women, but also for their partners.\u00a0<strong>This is a matter which affects our society at large<\/strong>\u00a0and which should be taken into consideration when making a diagnosis aimed at assisted reproduction treatment.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, it is also very important to provide complete information\/explanations during routine gynaecological check-ups. Many women request information about their chances of getting pregnant at a specific age, though females normally tend to plan for maternity between the ages of\u00a030\u00a0and\u00a032 years of age. All of the reasons that lead a woman to delay motherhood are valid, but we are\u00a0<strong>very clear when it comes to informing patients<\/strong>\u00a0about the moment when ovarian physiology is no longer optimal\u00a0so that they can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urecentrogutenberg.es\/en\/tools-for-facing-infertility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">face infertility<\/a>\u00a0without creating false hope.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, it is essential that patients are made aware of the success rates of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urecentrogutenberg.es\/en\/egg-freezing-frequently-asked-questions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">egg freezing, using the technique of vitrification<\/a>, at one age or another.\u00a0Vitrification of oocytes\u00a0allows a woman to freeze eggs which will be inseminated in the future, whether for pathologic or voluntary reasons. As we\u2019ve already discussed, egg quality at 40 years of age is not the same as it is at\u00a025, so\u00a0<strong>the sooner a patient can vitrify her eggs, the better the prognosis will be<\/strong>\u00a0once she\u2019s decided she\u2019s ready to become a mother.<\/p>\n<p>Advanced age is a factor that\u2019s present in a very high percentage of couples dealing with infertility.\u00a0<strong>It may be the only factor<\/strong>, or it may be accompanied by other factors such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urecentrogutenberg.es\/en\/habits-that-have-a-negative-impact-on-your-fertility-avoid-them\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bad habits which notably aggravate the difficulty<\/a>\u00a0of finding a solution.
