Hormones are one of the molecules responsible for the normal functioning of our bodies\u2019 systems, including the reproductive system. However, in our day\u2011to\u2011day lives we are exposed, to some extent, to so\u2011called\u00a0<strong>endocrine disruptors which<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>affect hormone development<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Among others, FSH and LH are released into circulation by the hypothalamus and pituitary gland located in the brain. These are gonadotropic hormones which regulate the functions of the ovaries and testicles and also cause eggs and sperm to mature; they are also\u00a0<strong>responsible for regulating the sex hormones<\/strong>\u00a0such as oestrogen and progesterone in the ovaries, and testosterone in the testicles, among other functions.<\/p>\n<p>These hormones that are related to fertility can also\u00a0<strong>be affected by endocrine disruptors<\/strong>. One of these substances is called endocrine disruptors, also known as EDC (<em>Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>These are chemical substances which interfere with the action of hormones that regulate the functioning of the body\u2019s different systems, such as the reproductive system. EDC are\u00a0<strong>able to \u201cmimic or imitate\u201d our hormones<\/strong>, thus blocking, inhibiting or exacerbating their effects. This leads to a disruption of the normal functioning of the body\u2019s different systems and for that reason they also affect fertility.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Where_are_EDC_found\"><\/span>Where are EDC found?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>As we were saying, when discussing endocrine disruptors we are talking about certain chemical substances. And in general we can find these substances in relatively common products. These are\u00a0<strong>products we use or even consume on a daily basis<\/strong>, so it\u2019s important to understand what they are.<\/p>\n<p>These chemicals have been synthesised in beauty and \u201cwellness\u201d\u00a0<strong>products which make our lives easier but have this drawback<\/strong>. We\u2019ll talk about some examples next:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pesticides, such as herbicides and insecticides.<\/li>\n<li>Phthalates, used to manufacture PVC.<\/li>\n<li>Bisphenol A, used to produce plastic containers (such as baby bottles, soft drink and water bottles, etc.).<\/li>\n<li>Polybrominated diphenyl ethers, used to manufacture clothing and electronics.<\/li>\n<li>Parabens, found in cosmetics.<\/li>\n<li>Triclosan, as an antiseptic and also found in cosmetics.<\/li>\n<li>Perfluorinated compounds, used to manufacture clothing, paper, pesticides, cosmetics\u2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_do_endocrine_disruptors_affect_us\"><\/span>How do endocrine disruptors affect us?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>As you can see, the main problem is that it\u2019s practically impossible to avoid EDC in our day\u2011to\u2011day lives. And although the use of many of these<strong>\u00a0EDC is restricted in many countries<\/strong>, the list of substances that seem to affect our hormones is long.<\/p>\n<p>Endocrine disruptors can be absorbed through inhalation, oral and even dermal exposure. Their effects on health and fertility depend on the dose\/amount and exposure time. Additionally, they can accumulate in the body over time and even be passed on to offspring, as the majority of these chemicals are capable of<strong>\u00a0crossing the placenta and can also be found in breast milk<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The harmful effects on health are associated with\u00a0obesity, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, different types of cancer, Parkinson\u2019s disease, changes to the usual age of menarche and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urecentrogutenberg.es\/en\/premature-menopause-and-how-its-related-to-female-infertility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">menopause<\/a>, etc. A\u00a0<strong>potentially higher incidence of congenital malformations<\/strong>, endocrine and metabolic issues, cardiovascular problems, etc. has been observed in offspring.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Can_endocrine_disruptors_have_an_impact_on_fertility\"><\/span>Can endocrine disruptors have an impact on fertility?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>As we suggested earlier, EDC have\u00a0<strong>implications on both male and female fertility<\/strong>\u00a0as they affect our hormones.<\/p>\n<p>First of all, there is a\u00a0<strong>relationship between EDC and testicular, ovarian, prostate and breast cancer<\/strong>. Additionally, however, endocrine disruptors are associated with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urecentrogutenberg.es\/en\/endometriosis-and-fertility-everything-you-need-to-know-if-you-want-to-become-a-mother\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">endometriosis<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urecentrogutenberg.es\/en\/female-infertility-conditions-and-diseases-that-can-cause-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">polycystic ovarian syndrome<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urecentrogutenberg.es\/en\/azoospermia-and-assisted-reproduction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">decreased sperm quality<\/a>\u00a0(lower sperm count and decreased motility),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urecentrogutenberg.es\/en\/how-a-females-age-impacts-her-fertility-and-chances-of-becoming-a-mother\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">diminished ovarian reserve and a lower likelihood of conceiving<\/a>, higher risk of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urecentrogutenberg.es\/en\/recurrent-pregnancy-loss-what-to-do-when-spontaneous-miscarriage-becomes-a-pattern\/\">miscarriage<\/a>, etc. As you can see, the list is long\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Although we come into contact with these substances on a daily basis, ideally we should\u00a0<strong>try to minimise their use\u00a0<\/strong>to the extent possible. A good alternative is to switch to eco\u2011friendly, natural products in addition to reducing plastics consumption.<\/p>\n<p>A general rule\u2011of\u2011thumb is that anything that has an artificial component or does not occur naturally, even if it offers instant gratification, could be harmful to our health.
