However, in 2005 the Civil Code of Spain was amended\u00a0<strong>to give same\u2011sex couples the same rights as heterosexual couples<\/strong>\u00a0(Law 13\/2005). Since then, the ROPA technique cannot be considered a donation, as one member of the couple is sharing her gametes with the other, just as a male shares his sperm with his wife in a heterosexual relationship.<\/p>\n<p>This means that with the ROPA method\u00a0one woman provides the eggs\u00a0which will be fertilised with anonymous donor sperm, and\u00a0<strong>the other woman receives the embryos<\/strong>\u00a0and carries the baby in the event that a pregnancy is achieved.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_does_the_ROPA_method_involve\"><\/span>What does the ROPA method involve?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The ROPA method\u00a0consists in performing\u00a0in vitro fertilisation\u00a0with the participation of<strong>\u00a0both members of a same\u2011sex female couple and an anonymous sperm donor<\/strong>, meaning that one woman provides her eggs so that the other can get pregnant.<\/p>\n<p>In this\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urecentrogutenberg.es\/en\/in-vitro-fertilisation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IVF treatment<\/a>, one of the members of the couple will have her ovaries stimulated and then undergo the egg collection procedure to retrieve the oocytes. These eggs are then\u00a0<strong>fertilised in the IVF laboratory\u00a0<\/strong>where several embryos are created.<\/p>\n<p>Once the eggs have correctly fertilised and early cell division has been observed, the number and stage of the embryos (day-3 or cells\/day\u20115 or blastocysts), to be transferred to the recipient\u2019s uterus -the woman who will carry the pregnancy- is decided on a case\u2011by\u2011case basis. The woman who will carry the pregnancy will, at the same time as her partner, receive\u00a0<strong>hormone treatment to prepare the endometrium\u00a0<\/strong>for pregnancy before receiving the embryos. (<a href=\"https:\/\/urecentrogutenberg.es\/en\/moments-in-assisted-reproduction-the-embryo-transfer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">embryo transfer<\/a>)<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_do_success_rates_with_the_ROPA_method_look_like\"><\/span>What do success rates with the ROPA method look like?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It is important to point out that success rates using the ROPA technique will depend on the quality of the eggs that are used, a factor which is\u00a0<strong>very closely related to the age of the woman<\/strong>\u00a0who is providing her oocytes.<\/p>\n<p>We know that oocyte quality begins to decline little by little starting at the age of 35, and that this decrease in quality is quite significant\u00a0after the age of 40. For this reason,\u00a0use of this technique<strong>\u00a0should not be considered if there isn\u2019t a reasonable likelihood of success<\/strong>. The patients\u2019 doctor will assess their particular case and determine whether or not use of this method is indicated.<\/p>\n<p>At any rate, we can say that there is one important difference, on a human and emotional level, between\u00a0the ROPA method\u00a0and traditional IVF treatment. And it is that\u00a0<strong>both women actively participate in starting their new family<\/strong>.
