What most people don\u2019t know, however, is that there is\u00a0<strong>another group of micronutrients<\/strong>\u00a0(iodine, zinc, co\u2011enzyme Q10 and vitamins E and D), that play an important role not only in trying to conceive but also in carrying a pregnancy to term.<\/p>\n<p>Today we are going to focus on vitamin D as several studies have shown that a significant part of the general population is lacking in this vitamin, and there is also an increasing amount of evidence showing that it<strong>\u00a0impacts both male and female fertility<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Generally speaking, vitamin D\u00a0<strong>plays a direct role in bone metabolism<\/strong>\u00a0and ensures that the endocrine and immune systems function properly. For example, scientists affirm that this vitamin is related to the\u00a0<strong>quality of ovarian and endometrial tissue<\/strong>, thus encouraging proper embryo implantation in the mother\u2019s womb.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>European Journal of Endocrinology<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/press.endocrine.org\/doi\/10.1210\/jc.2014-1802\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">published a study<\/a>\u00a0affirming that women with sufficient vitamin D levels\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urecentrogutenberg.es\/en\/in-vitro-fertilisation-questions-assisted-reproduction-treatment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">undergoing in vitro fertilisation<\/a>\u00a0produced high quality embryos, thus having\u00a0<strong>better chances of conceiving\u00a0<\/strong>than those who were deficient in this vitamin.<\/p>\n<p>According to other authors, vitamin D levels could also be related to endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome, progesterone and estradiol levels\u2026 all of which are\u00a0<strong>important factors in female fertility<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of the male factor and male fertility, scientific studies support the claim that optimum vitamin D levels encourage correct spermatozoid development by\u00a0<strong>improving sperm count and motility<\/strong>\u00a0while also increasing testosterone levels.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Vitamin_D_supplements_in_Assisted_Reproduction\"><\/span>Vitamin D supplements in Assisted Reproduction<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The incidence of infertility and vitamin D deficits in the population have led specialists toward\u00a0<strong>new treatment approaches<\/strong>\u00a0that may include the use of vitamin D supplements in couples who are having trouble conceiving.<\/p>\n<p>In the latest issue of\u00a0<em>Human Reproduction,<\/em>\u00a0results were published following a review and meta-analysis that show a relationship between vitamin D supplement administration and an\u00a0<strong>improvement in live birth rates<\/strong>\u00a0after assisted reproduction treatment.<\/p>\n<p>These studies show a strong relationship between low vitamin D levels in women and decreased live birth rates following assisted reproduction, in comparison to women with sufficient vitamin D levels. Researchers warn that \u201calthough an association has been identified, the beneficial effects of correcting a vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency\u00a0<strong>must be tested with clinical trials<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, women who are trying to conceive shouldn\u2019t go running to their local pharmacies to purchase vitamin D supplements until we know more about the effects. Taking too much vitamin D is possible, and\u00a0<strong>overdosing can cause calcium to build up in the body<\/strong>, thus weakening bones and harming the heart and kidneys\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_naturally_achieve_sufficient_vitamin_D_levels\"><\/span>How to naturally achieve sufficient vitamin D levels<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Sunlight is humans\u2019 main source of vitamin D. In this regard our fertility clinic in Spain is in a privileged region, so exercising outside or simply taking a walk to take advantage of the sun\u2019s rays are good options.
