On occasion, part of the endometrial tissue may\u00a0<strong>grow in an excessive or irregular way<\/strong>, leading to something we call endometrial polyps. This is what we\u2019d like to talk to you about in this article today.<\/p>\n<p>One of the important points when talking about endometrial polyps is that, as they are considered an abnormal growth of tissue, they are classified as tumours. Nonetheless, you must keep in mind that\u00a0<strong>the majority are benign<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Endometrial polyps are, generally speaking,\u00a0<strong>small in size and grow slowly<\/strong>, though on occasion they can occupy the entire endometrial cavity. It is estimated that they develop in 10% of women.\u00a0<strong>In patients with fertility issues the incidence is higher<\/strong>, between 15% and 25%.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the likelihood of developing endometrial polyps is greater in\u00a0<strong>women with obesity<\/strong>, hypertension,\u00a0<strong>women over the age of 40<\/strong>\u00a0and women who do not ovulate (anovulation), such as patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_symptoms_do_endometrial_polyps_cause\"><\/span>What symptoms do endometrial polyps cause?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The majority of polyps, due to their small size, do not cause any symptoms. The polyps which do cause symptoms, however, can cause\u00a0<strong>bleeding between periods or bleeding during intercourse<\/strong>. Polyps which grow to a large size can even become so big that they protrude through the cervix.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_are_endometrial_polyps_diagnosed\"><\/span>How are endometrial polyps diagnosed?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The first test done to diagnose a polyp is the transvaginal ultrasound and it should be performed during the first half of the female\u2019s cycle before ovulation. A definitive diagnosis is made by performing a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urecentrogutenberg.es\/en\/diagnostic-hysteroscopy-in-assisted-reproduction\/\"><strong>hysteroscopy<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_the_treatment_for_endometrial_polyps\"><\/span>What\u2019s the treatment for endometrial polyps?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In many cases, endometrial polyps don\u2019t require any treatment as they will go away on their own. However, the treatment of choice is usually surgical removal, by hysteroscopy, allowing for the polyp to be\u00a0<strong>completely removed and analysed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Polyp removal by hysteroscopy is a simple technique for experienced professionals and is normally an outpatient procedure using local or general anaesthesia.\u00a0<strong>Recovery following this surgical intervention is generally very quick<\/strong>\u00a0and most patients feel back to their normal selves almost immediately, though some women will experience some spotting or discomfort similar to a period.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_do_endometrial_polyps_affect_fertility\"><\/span>How do endometrial polyps affect fertility?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Polyps cannot be overlooked when studying a patient\u2019s fertility. Although there are differing opinions when it comes to which polyps impact fertility depending on size and location, it has been observed that natural pregnancy rates increase\u00a0<strong>by 23% to 35% after having polyps removed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, several studies on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urecentrogutenberg.es\/en\/in-vitro-fertilisation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>in vitro fertilisation<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0cycles have concluded that endometrial polyps which are less than 2 centimetres in size have no effect on the outcome of treatment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Would you like to have your fertility tested and rule out the presence of polyps?
