But, without a doubt, there is one question that is asked more than any other and which\u00a0<strong>we continue to ask ourselves when the months start to go by\u00a0<\/strong>and we still haven\u2019t been able to conceive: How long does it take to get pregnant?<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s true is that we tend to assume that once we make the decision to become parents that we\u2019ll conceive quickly and easily. However,\u00a0<strong>the sad reality is that humans aren\u2019t good at reproducing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to poor chances of conceiving, other factors such as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urecentrogutenberg.es\/en\/how-a-females-age-impacts-her-fertility-and-chances-of-becoming-a-mother\/\">age of the female<\/a>\u00a0at the time she decides to start trying to conceive,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urecentrogutenberg.es\/en\/female-infertility-conditions-and-diseases-that-can-cause-it\/\">illnesses or conditions<\/a>\u00a0that prevent or make natural conception more difficult,\u00a0an undesirable body mass index and\u00a0unhealthy lifestyle habits\u00a0may turn the road to motherhood into\u00a0<strong>an obstacle course<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>As we\u2019ve said before, humans are very inefficient when it comes to reproducing. This is mainly because\u00a0<strong>women are fertile for only a few days during their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urecentrogutenberg.es\/en\/what-are-the-main-phases-of-the-menstrual-cycle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">menstrual cycles<\/a><\/strong>, which in turn greatly reduces the likelihood of conception. If we add in the age at which couples start trying to conceive, the chances of getting pregnant are even lower. This means that the remaining 80% will not get pregnant.<\/p>\n<p>If we look at the data for\u00a0<strong>women over the age of 40<\/strong>\u00a0who are trying to conceive, the likelihood of conception each month is 5%. In other words, only\u00a0<strong>five in every one hundred women over the age of 40 will successfully fall pregnant<\/strong>. We must also take into account the possibility that the pregnancy will naturally stop progressing (called spontaneous miscarriage), which affects 10-15% of pregnant women.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_are_the_cumulative_pregnancy_rates\"><\/span>What are the cumulative pregnancy rates?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>According to the published data, only 20% of women will get pregnant the first month they try, 57% after three months of trying, 72% after six months and\u00a0<strong>85% will successfully conceive before the year is up<\/strong>. Of the couples who haven\u2019t gotten pregnant within the first year of trying, only half of them will be successful during their second year. After the second year of trying, the odds of conceiving drop significantly to less than 3% per month.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"_What_do_we_need_to_do_in_order_to_get_pregnant\"><\/span><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>What do we need to do in order to get pregnant?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>As we always say at URE Centro Gutenberg, persistence is your best friend when it comes to fertility. The ideal situation is to have\u00a0<strong>regular sexual intercourse<\/strong>\u00a0at least two or three times a week, especially on the days leading up to ovulation. This way you can be sure that there will be sperm in the fallopian tubes waiting for an egg to be released.<\/p>\n<p>To calculate when\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/urecentrogutenberg.es\/en\/ovulation-why-its-important-to-know-when-it-takes-place-in-assisted-reproduction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ovulation will take place<\/a><\/strong>, this will occur on cycle day 14 in females whose cycles come regularly every 28 days, give or take. This calculation\u00a0<strong>is more difficult for females whose\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urecentrogutenberg.es\/en\/is-it-possible-to-get-pregnant-if-my-cycles-are-irregular\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cycles are irregular<\/a><\/strong>, but there are different ways to estimate when ovulation will happen,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/urecentrogutenberg.es\/en\/how-can-you-calculate-your-fertile-days-to-become-a-mom\/\">we explain these different methods here<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>We would like to reiterate the fact that the best time to try to conceive are the\u00a0<strong>days leading up to ovulation<\/strong>\u00a0when there is more cervical mucous and it is clear and slippery in appearance, as this type of mucous facilitates the processes of sperm capacitation and entry into the uterus.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"At_what_point_should_we_decide_to_consult_with_a_fertility_specialist\"><\/span>At what point should we decide to consult with a fertility specialist?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If\u00a0<strong>after one year of regular intercourse<\/strong>\u00a0-two or three times a week without the use of any contraception method-, you have not gotten pregnant, we recommend that you consult with a specialist. If you\u2019re trying to get pregnant and you\u2019re 35 or older, we recommend seeing a specialist if conception hasn\u2019t occurred within 6 to 8 months. Additionally, before trying to get pregnant it\u2019s advisable to be checked by a gynaecologist to confirm that your gynaecological health is in check.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Other_interesting_facts\"><\/span>Other interesting facts<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>According to recent data published by the Spanish Fertility Society, infertility affects approximately one in every six couples in Spain and\u00a0<strong>it\u2019s estimated that it could affect one in every four couples in the future<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Age is the determining factor\u00a0<\/strong>when it comes to conceiving. The most fertile age group is 20 to 30 years old, and then women become less fertile as they near the age of 35. After the age of 35 fertility declines drastically.<\/p>\n<p>For all these reasons, at URE Centro Gutenberg\u00a0<strong>we insist that motherhood shouldn\u2019t be delayed\u00a0<\/strong>to the extent possible. Or, if this isn\u2019t possible, an alternative is to\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/urecentrogutenberg.es\/en\/preservation-female-fertility-questions\/\">preserve your fertility<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0through egg freezing.
