Since\u00a0those first steps back in 1987, it wasn\u2019t until \u201889 that the founder of URE Centro Gutenberg, Dr. Manuel Mart\u00ednez Moya, and his team made Lorena\u2019s birth a reality. She was the\u00a0<strong>first baby born as a result of in vitro fertilisation<\/strong>\u00a0in the province of M\u00e1laga (Spain).<\/p>\n<p>This milestone marked a turning point in our province. Since then, advances have been made on a consistent basis, each one greater than the last. Medications are increasingly safer and more efficient.\u00a0<strong>And we have access to better laboratory techniques\u00a0<\/strong>which allow for improved embryo development and observation.<\/p>\n<p>One example is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urecentrogutenberg.es\/en\/pre-implantation-genetic-diagnosis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pre-implantation genetic diagnosis<\/a>\u00a0which makes it possible to rule out serious genetic illnesses in embryos. At URE we are proud to have been a part of the\u00a0<strong>greatest milestone of 20<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century medicine<\/strong>, just as the birth of Louise Brown was. When she was born in Manchester (United Kingdom) on 25<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0July 1978, Louise became the world\u2019s first test\u2011tube baby. This ground\u2011breaking event happened 42 years ago and was the result of the sacrifice and hard work of her parents and Dr. Edwards\u2019 team.<\/p>\n<p>This past March, to celebrate Lorena\u2019s 30<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0birthday, we wanted to do something special. Something special for our fertility clinic in Spain, for the province of M\u00e1laga and also for you. An event\u00a0<strong>to show our appreciation for all the families we have formed part of<\/strong>\u00a0and who have placed their trust in us. That\u2019s why we brought Louise Brown to Malaga \u2013 she shared with us her experience as the world\u2019s first IVF baby as well as very personal details regarding her origins.<\/p>\n<p>Louise\u2019s parents spent ten years waiting for a pregnancy that never came to fruition. This even caused her mother to fall into a deep depression. Her parents finally decided to\u00a0<strong>travel more than 600\u00a0kilometres from home to make their dream come true<\/strong>. They visited the hospital of physiologist Robert Edwards, gynaecologist\u00a0Patricks Steptoe\u00a0and Jean Purdy, the woman who would become the world\u2019s first embryologist. These three individuals were able to find success after hundreds of failed attempts at IVF techniques.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"One_small_step_for_medicine%E2%80%A6_one_giant_leap_for_mankind\"><\/span>One small step for medicine\u2026 one giant leap for mankind<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Our medical director, Dr. Claudio \u00c1lvarez, commented during Louise Brown\u2019s visit that her birth had been \u201cone small step for medicine but one giant leap for mankind\u201d. Up until the time of her birth, fertility treatments\u00a0<strong>were very far from being what they are today<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Treatment was focussed on scheduling intercourse on the female\u2019s fertile days, artificial insemination, and surgery and microsurgery to remedy fallopian tubes issues. All of these options had very low success rates.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urecentrogutenberg.es\/en\/in-vitro-fertilisation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">In vitro fertilisation<\/a>\u00a0lead to an\u00a0<strong>exponential leap in pregnancy rates\u00a0<\/strong>via assisted reproduction.<\/p>\n<p>In spite of her story, Louise revealed that she doesn\u2019t feel special and urged us to\u00a0<strong>continue making advances in reproductive medicine<\/strong>. And to those future mums and dads who are struggling to make their dreams come true, we encourage you to not give up and to trust in scientific progress.<\/p>\n<p>Louise also confessed that she\u2019s always felt like Dr. Edwards\u2019 team was a part of her family, like grandparents, an important part of her life. This is something we understand quite well here at URE Centro Gutenberg, as it\u2019s\u00a0<strong>the way we feel with Lorena and each and every baby<\/strong>\u00a0we help bring into the world.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019d also like to thank all our guests who joined us in celebrating this touching event.
