And our response is always the same: if you haven\u2019t conceived naturally after a year of regular, unprotected intercourse, we recommend that you visit a specialist in gynaecology. He or she will perform the necessary testing in order\u00a0<strong>to determine the cause of the problem<\/strong>, and this is what we call the basic fertility study.<\/p>\n<p>It is important to keep in mind that this process\u00a0<strong>does not begin with tests or analyses<\/strong>. First things first, the most important thing is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urecentrogutenberg.es\/en\/female-infertility-conditions-and-diseases-that-can-cause-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to try to determine the cause of infertility<\/a>\u00a0by reviewing detailed medical records.<\/p>\n<p>For this first step your gynaecologist\u00a0<strong>will ask you the relevant questions<\/strong>. Initially speaking we\u2019ll need\u00a0<strong>three basic tests<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Two of these tests will be for the female. The first is a hormone analysis which is performed between days three and five of the woman\u2019s period to\u00a0<strong>confirm whether the ovaries are functioning properly<\/strong>. The second test is a transvaginal ultrasound which is essential to detecting anatomic abnormalities and also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urecentrogutenberg.es\/en\/anti-mullerian-hormone-and-ovarian-reserve-why-we-order-this-test-in-assisted-reproduction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">assessing ovarian reserve<\/a>. In other words, the number of eggs each woman has.<\/p>\n<p>The third test we request is for the male and is a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urecentrogutenberg.es\/en\/how-to-interpret-a-sperm-analysis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">basic sperm analysis<\/a>. Through this analysis\u00a0<strong>we evaluate the number, motility and morphology of spermatozoids<\/strong>\u00a0in addition to analysing capacitation or REM, which helps us determine how many spermatozoids are really capable of fertilisation. If the results come back abnormal then a second test would be clinically indicated, as sperm parameters can vary greatly from one analysis to another. The sperm analysis makes it possible for us to decide whether we should perform further testing on the male partner or not, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urecentrogutenberg.es\/en\/in-vitro-fertilisation-questions-assisted-reproduction-treatment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">it guides us in terms of determining the ideal fertility treatment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Other_diagnostic_testing_in_the_basic_fertility_study\"><\/span>Other diagnostic testing in the basic fertility study<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Alternatively, and depending on the results of the sperm study or a suspicion the doctor may have based on clinical indicators, we could perform an\u00a0<strong>X\u2011ray on the fallopian tubes, or a hysterosalpingogram<\/strong>. The purpose of this imaging test would be to assess whether the fallopian tubes are functioning properly, the organ where the joining of the egg and spermatozoid takes place.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/urecentrogutenberg.es\/en\/travel-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">At our fertility clinic in Spain<\/a>, once we have all of these results we are\u00a0<strong>able to diagnose the majority of reproductive issues<\/strong>. And, as a result, we can offer you different options in terms of fertility treatment.<\/p>\n<p>One thing to keep in mind is that, on occasion, results will come back completely normal. This is because it\u2019s not always possible to pinpoint the exact cause of fertility issues through testing.
